Explore the Mountains of the Moon

This 10-day Rwenzori trekking adventure is designed to take you through the Central Circuit Trail, the most scenic and immersive route within Rwenzori Mountains National Park. This trail offers trekkers a chance to marvel at unique vegetation zones, glacial lakes, snow-capped peaks, and the rewarding opportunity to summit Margherita Peak (5,109m), the third-highest point in Africa. Based on your preference and fitness level, you may choose to explore the full Central Circuit or push further to conquer the summit of Mount Stanley.

Day 1: Arrival in Uganda – Airport Pickup & Hotel Transfer

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, a representative from Leone Tours and Travel will be waiting to receive you. After a short briefing about the trekking adventure, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala.
Overnight & Dinner: At your preferred accommodation.

Day 2: Transfer to Rwenzori Mountains National Park

After breakfast, begin your scenic drive westwards to Rwenzori Mountains National Park, with an en-route lunch stop in Fort Portal. This drive offers panoramic views of tea plantations, crater lakes, and the foothills of the Rwenzoris. Upon arrival, check in at Ruboni Community Camp or a nearby lodge and rest in preparation for the trek.
Dinner & Overnight: Ruboni Community Camp or similar.

Day 3: Hike from Nyakalengija (1,600m) to Nyabitaba Hut (2,650m)

After an early breakfast, transfer to Nyakalengija trailhead where you’ll meet your mountain guide and receive a pre-trek briefing by UWA rangers. Begin the hike through Bakonjo farmlands, banana plantations, and dense montane forest, crossing the Mubuku River and Mahoma River, before a steady climb through the forest to Nyabitaba Hut.
Distance: Approx. 8 km, 5–6 hours
Overnight: Nyabitaba Hut

Day 4: Trek to John Matte Hut (3,350m)

Depart Nyabitaba and descend through the forest to Kurt Shafer Bridge, where the Bujuku and Mubuku Rivers meet. From here, climb into the bamboo zone, navigating slippery moss-covered trails. Pass through the Nyamileju rock shelter, and into heather and lobelia vegetation before arriving at John Matte Hut.
Distance: Approx. 11 km, 6–7 hours
Overnight: John Matte Hut

Day 5: Trek to Bujuku Hut (3,900m)

The trail leads you past Lower Bigo Bog and through dense giant lobelia forests, crossing boardwalks and swamps. Reach the spectacular Lake Bujuku, with breathtaking views of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and Mount Speke. Arrive at Bujuku Hut, set near the lake’s edge.
Distance: Approx. 5–6 hours
Overnight: Bujuku Hut.

Day 6: Climb to Elena Hut (4,541m)

Start with a steep ascent over muddy ground, climbing through the Groundsel Gully and reaching Scott-Elliot Pass (4,372m). From here, you’ll face a challenging ascent to Elena Hut, located near the Stanley Glacier, where those attempting Margherita Peak will stage for the summit attempt.
Distance: Approx. 4–5 hours
Overnight: Elena Hut.

Day 7: Summit Margherita Peak (5,109m) – Descend to Kitandara Hut (4,023m)

For those trekking to the summit, wake up before dawn and begin your technical ascent using ropes, crampons, and ice axes to reach Margherita Peak, the highest point in the Rwenzori range. After celebrating your summit, descend back to Scott-Elliot Pass, then continue down to Kitandara Hut, situated beside the tranquil Lake Kitandara.
Note: Those not summiting can take a relaxed trek directly from Elena to Kitandara Hut.
Overnight: Kitandara Hut

Day 8: Descend to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,260m)

Begin with a challenging ascent from Lake Kitandara to Freshfield Pass (4,280m), offering panoramic views of the Congo plains and Mount Stanley. The descent to Guy Yeoman Hut takes you through dramatic rock formations, waterfalls, and boggy valleys.
Distance: Approx. 5–7 hours
Overnight: Guy Yeoman Hut

Day 9: Descend to Nyakalengija – Transfer to Fort Portal/Kampala

After breakfast, begin the final descent past Lake Mahoma, Nyabitaba Hut, and through dense forests. You’ll exit the park at Nyakalengija trailhead after approximately 6–7 hours of trekking. Freshen up and enjoy lunch before beginning the drive back to Fort Portal or Kampala for an overnight rest.
Overnight: At a lodge en route or in Kampala.

Day 10: Drive to Entebbe – Airport Transfer

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and begin your journey to Entebbe International Airport, with a lunch stop in Mbarara. Arrive in Entebbe in time for your international flight.
End of Trekking Adventure.
