Gorilla Trekking Rules and Guidelines in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo

Gorilla Trekking Rules and Guidelines in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo

Gorilla trekking is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in Africa. Before embarking on this adventure, understanding the official gorilla trekking rules is essential for a safe and respectful encounter. It gives travelers the opportunity to walk through tropical forests and spend time observing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

The experience can involve several hours of walking, depending on where the gorilla family is located. Once the gorillas are found, visitors are normally allowed a limited amount of time with them under the supervision of trained park guides and trackers.

Because gorillas are wild animals and are highly sensitive to human contact, every visitor must follow specific gorilla trekking rules and guidelines. These rules protect both the gorillas and the people visiting them.

At Leone Tours & Travel, we encourage every traveler to understand these guidelines before beginning their gorilla trekking adventure.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking is available in several destinations across Central and East Africa. Our safari programs can take you to some of the region’s most important gorilla destinations, including:

  • Uganda – mainly Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
  • Rwanda – Volcanoes National Park
  • Democratic Republic of Congo – including destinations where both mountain and lowland gorilla experiences are available

Each destination offers a different experience, but the same principle applies everywhere: gorillas must be treated with respect and their natural environment must be protected.

What Is a Gorilla Trekking Permit?

A gorilla trekking permit is an official authorization that allows a visitor to participate in a gorilla trek.

Permits are limited because only a controlled number of visitors can visit each habituated gorilla family on a particular day. For this reason, travelers are strongly advised to arrange their permits well before their intended trekking date, especially during busy travel seasons.

Leone Tours & Travel can assist with organizing your gorilla permit together with transportation, accommodation, guiding and other safari arrangements.

Important Gorilla Trekking Rules

1. Only a Limited Number of Visitors Can Visit Each Gorilla Family

Gorilla families are visited by a controlled number of tourists each day. Limiting visitor numbers helps reduce pressure on the gorillas and lowers the risk of transmitting human illnesses to them.

It also helps maintain a calm environment where the animals can continue behaving naturally.

2. Do Not Trek If You Are Sick

Visitors who have symptoms of infectious illnesses such as flu, a serious cough or other contagious conditions should not take part in gorilla trekking.

Mountain gorillas are closely related to humans and can be vulnerable to some human diseases. Protecting their health is therefore extremely important.

If you become unwell before your trek, inform your safari operator or park authorities so that appropriate arrangements can be considered.

3. Follow the Instructions of Your Guide

Your ranger and trekking guides are trained to understand gorilla behavior and the forest environment.

Always listen to their instructions and follow their directions when approaching, watching or moving away from the gorillas.

Your guide’s advice is there to keep both visitors and wildlife safe.

4. Keep Your Voice Low

The forest is a natural home for gorillas and many other species.

Avoid shouting or making unnecessary noise while trekking. Loud sounds can disturb wildlife and may cause animals to move away.

Speaking quietly also gives you a better chance of observing other forest species during your trek.

5. Keep a Safe Distance From the Gorillas

According to standard gorilla trekking rules, visitors must maintain a distance of at least 7 metres (21 feet) when observing gorillas… If a gorilla approaches you, remain calm and follow your guide’s instructions. Never attempt to touch or follow the animal.

6. Never Touch a Gorilla

Even when a gorilla comes close to you, do not try to touch it.

Gorillas are wild animals, and physical contact can create risks for both the animal and the visitor. It can also increase the possibility of disease transmission.

Enjoy the encounter from a respectful distance and allow the gorillas to move freely.

7. Do Not Eat or Drink Near the Gorillas

Food and drinks should not be consumed while you are with the gorillas.

Food can attract animals and may change their natural behavior. Visitors should wait until they are away from the gorilla group before eating or drinking.

8. Never Litter in the Forest

Everything you bring into the forest should leave with you.

Do not throw plastic bottles, food packaging, tissues or other waste on the trail. Litter can harm wildlife and damage the forest environment.

Carry your rubbish until you reach the appropriate disposal point.

9. Avoid Using Flash Photography

Flash photography can disturb or frighten gorillas.

When taking photographs, switch off your camera flash and follow the instructions given by your guide. Move slowly and avoid sudden movements while photographing the animals.

A good camera with sufficient natural-light capability can help you capture memorable photographs without disturbing the gorillas.

10. Do Not Run When a Gorilla Approaches

Seeing a gorilla at close range can be exciting, but it is important to remain calm.

If a gorilla approaches you, do not run away or make sudden movements. Stay where you are and listen to your guide.

Your guide understands gorilla behavior and will advise you on what to do.

11. Avoid Direct Staring

If a gorilla becomes close to you, avoid prolonged direct eye contact.

Remain calm, keep your movements slow and follow the instructions of your ranger or guide.

12. Do Not Imitate Gorilla Movements or Sounds

Gorillas communicate through different sounds, gestures and body movements.

Visitors should never attempt to copy these behaviors. What may seem like a harmless action to a visitor could be misunderstood by a wild animal.

Observe quietly and allow the guides to manage the encounter.

13. Stay With Your Trekking Group

Always remain with your group and follow the established trail unless your guide instructs otherwise.

Do not wander away from the group or attempt to approach the gorillas from another direction.

Staying together makes the experience safer and helps protect the forest.

How Long Does Gorilla Trekking Take?

The duration of a gorilla trek is not fixed.

You may spend a few hours walking through the forest before locating your assigned gorilla family. The terrain, weather and movement of the gorillas can all affect the length of the trek.

This is one reason why gorilla trekking is a genuine wildlife adventure rather than a predictable sightseeing activity.

Once you reach the gorilla family, visitors are given a limited period to observe them according to the rules of the destination.

Who Can Take Part in Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking has an age requirement, with the minimum age generally set at 15 years.

The trek can involve steep paths, slippery ground and several hours of walking, so participants should also be physically prepared for the conditions.

If you have concerns about your fitness or mobility, speak with your safari operator before booking so that the most suitable arrangements can be considered.

What Should You Carry for Gorilla Trekking?

A little preparation can make your trekking experience much more comfortable.

We recommend carrying:

  • Waterproof hiking shoes
  • Long trousers and a comfortable shirt
  • Lightweight rain jacket
  • Garden or hiking gloves
  • Drinking water
  • Snacks for before or after the gorilla encounter
  • Insect repellent
  • Hat and sunscreen
  • Camera without flash
  • Small backpack
  • Walking stick

Because rainforest weather can change quickly, waterproof clothing and protection for your camera and other equipment are useful.

Why Are Gorilla Trekking Rules Important?

Gorilla trekking is not simply about finding the animals and taking photographs. It is about visiting their home responsibly.

The rules help reduce stress, protect gorilla health, prevent unnecessary changes in their behavior and preserve the forest for future generations.

Following the guidelines also makes the experience safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
