The Toyota Hilux offers great ride height for game viewing, extra ground clearance, and a smooth drive in the national parks. On asphalt roads, it’s more comfortable at higher speeds than the classic Land Cruiser. The covered canopy in the back keeps your luggage and camping gear easily accessible.

BUDGET - Toyota RAV4 5-doors
Uganda’s most popular 4×4: the Toyota RAV4. Sporty, compact, and fuel-efficient, it’s easy to drive and perfect for budget-friendly adventures. This automatic, full-time 4WD gets 10-12 km/l, far more economical than a Land Cruiser.
The 5-door model fits up to 4 people, but for 3 or more adults with camping gear, the Hilux or Land Cruiser is the better choice.
Not suitable for travel to Kidepo or Karamoja.

Whether you are travelling on a budget, love the outdoors, or just prefer not to pre-book your accommodation – self-driving and camping in Uganda is a great way to explore the country.
For those excited to sleep under the stars, our Toyota Hilux Double Cab and Land Cruisers can be equipped with a rooftop tent. Alternatively, you can opt for a ground tent which is also possible with a RAV4. Both options come with a set of camping gear, including a mattress, sleeping bag, headlights, cooking equipment, table and chairs. The large storage space in the Hilux makes it the perfect car to take on a self-drive camping safari in Uganda.

Having a tour guide and driver all-in-1 is a great option for Roadtrippers who want to remain in charge of their holiday and itinerary yet prefer someone else to do the driving. At the same time, being accompanied by a local driver-guide means learning more about the local culture and wildlife in Uganda while you travel. All our drivers speak English and are experienced tour guides and bush mechanics. No stress, difficulties or long hours behind the wheel; your local driver is there to facilitate and ease your travels.
